Class Differences

How hard/ what is the difference between classes?

Yin - This is a restorative class, you might use cushions and bolsters to make yourself super comfortable whilst holding in poses for a few minutes. You may only do 5-10 poses in one class. The purpose of this class is to restore your energy whilst moving deeper into the stretch. Yin is the opposite of Yang, which are high energy flowing classes.

Slow flow - This class has been designed for those who prefer a slower more mindful practice. We take is super slow, hold each pose for several breaths and practice meditation in holding poses.

Fundamentals - This class is designed to look at the ‘nitty gritty’ and get into the detail of each pose. Learning the how and the why, rather than being in a constant flow of movement.

All levels vinyasa - Soul Sanctuary is primarily a vinyasa yoga studio, our all level classes follow the Baptiste teaching methodology creating an empowering flow.

Power vinyasa - Yoga is a never ending practice, there is always a more advance versions of a pose to be learnt and thats often where the personal growth lies! Power classes explore more challenging poses including arm balances, binds and inversions, usually in a faster paced sequence. Some of these poses will come up in all-level classes, equally you can always take an easier modification in the power class if you feel like taking it easier, it’s always important to listen to your body and not worry about what anyone else is doing on their mat, it’s time for you! We teach 60 and 90 minute variations of this class.

Ashtanga - Ashtanga is a traditional style of yoga with a set sequence. Usually taught in sanskrit, the poses are challenging and often include strong assists to move you into the asana. This class is great for those who prefer a more traditional practice, with sanskrit counts and challenging poses.

Can my child come to class?

We do have kids classes in the holidays and will soon be adding a regular kids class to the schedule. Kids are allowed to come to class with you as long as you have signed the kids waiver here. However, we do ask you to try the class before you bring your child and knowing your child best, make a decision whether the class content is appropriate and whether they will be able to stay focussed for the duration of the class.

Can I leave my child outside class?

Our T&C’s state that we 'do not allow children to wait unsupervised outside of class or in the cafe’, please do have a read here ‘under 18’s’.

Reasons being - If the child needs anything, they are unable to come into class and fetch you / this is disruptive. If anything was to happen to the child they are unsupervised in our premisses which puts us in a difficult position. If we allow one person to bring their child, it’s unfair for others who arrange child care, or if others see kids waiting outside it will be assumed that they can do the same. Considering the space in class/environment we are trying to create, we cannot have kids sitting in the studio. If you feel your son/daughter would be able to cope/concentrate in class, you can sign the under 18’s waiver available to download here. If she/he is not in the class, she will need to be with a supervising adult.

Please also take your socks of whilst you are practicing yoga, whilst we know no one likes their own feet :D you you need to be able to grip your feet on the mat during the sequence, safety first!

What happens if I am late for class?

As stated in our T&C’s, we ask that students arrive 5-10 minutes before class start time. If you arrive after the class start time please do not come into the classroom. The cafe is closed for pre and post work classes so the front door will be locked at the class start time. We aim to promote respect for our students by starting and ending class on time and respect for teacher by arriving in time. Lateness results in the a late cancel charge as stated above.

I’m a beginner - which classes are good for me?

It’s always a good idea to come to ‘Slow Flow’ or ‘Fundamentals’ classes for your first 2-3 weeks so that you get a clear understanding of the sequence (but this is not obligatory). Most of our classes are ‘all levels’ so they are suitable for beginners provided you have a good level of fitness and don’t have a limiting injury. Power classes are for those who enjoy a more challenging class. Some students feels more comfortable booking private sessions before joining class, this is great way to gain confidence if you are worried in any way.

Please see above. 90 minute classes are more challenging, but there are always ways to modify and make poses easy or just take rest whenever you need to.
